Eat Healthy

Why Slow Cooking is Ideal for Family-Time Meals

April 1, 2021

If this past year has taught us anything, it’s how much we cherish the dinner table as a special place to come together, strengthen bonds and create a sense of security with family.

Everyday activities like sharing a meal together can make a real difference in the life of your child. Researchers have discovered that kids who have 5 or more family dinners per week are twice as likely to do well in school as they are more emotionally strong and have better mental health.

Family meals have proven to be perfect opportunities for parents to expose children to different foods and expand their tastes. A slow cooker can come in handy as it brings out the flavour in foods, saves preparation time and cuts down on cleanup.

From casseroles, to hearty stews or soups and of course mouth-watering beef brisket, there are nearly limitless foods that can be easily prepared in a slow cooker.

What you will need:

Succulent and seasoned pulled pork with paprika and cinnamon is delicious when you make it in the slow cooker.

  • 1.5- 2kg pork shoulder (skin removed)

  • 1 onion, sliced

  • 2 tsp smoked paprika

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp flour

  • 2 tsp oil

  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed

  • 160ml cloudy apple juice

  • 1 tbsp black treacle

  • 2 tbsp honey

  • 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 50g onion marmalade

  • 1 apple, thinly sliced

  • 6 - 8 bread rolls/slider buns

  • Mustard and Mayo

4-Easy Steps:

STEP 1 - Place the onion slices at the bottom of your slow cooker. In a small bowl mix together 1 tbsp salt with 1 tsp ground black pepper, the smoked paprika and cinnamon. Put the flour onto a plate then rub the spice mixture over the pork.

STEP 2 - Heat the oil in a large frying pan – next roll the spiced pork in the flour before putting it into the pan to sear it on all sides until it becomes a golden colour then transition into the slow cooker.

STEP 3 - Combine all the ingredients for slow cooking the pork then pour over the meat. Seal the lid and use the low setting for approx. 8 hours.

STEP 4 – When the meat is fully tenderized, remove and place on a roasting tray to pull it into bite-size chunks using 2 forks to shred. Remember to add some of the cooking juices over the pork and mix together. Place on bun and add your apple slice, mustard and mayo.

"Simple daily activities such as sharing a meal, a conversation, or a book can have an enormous impact on the life of a child.”
